L'WREN SCOTT SPRING 2010

There's a lot to love in L'wren Scott's Spring 2010 collection, not the least of which are her myriad dresses, but tonight I want to applaud her menswear-inspired looks, her mix and match suits.

Both slick and frilly, Scott's pant looks incoportate just enough ruffle to compliment the sleek silhouettes. Equal parts Mad Hatter and Prince, , these looks show what could happen if women discarded their dresses and walked the streets as dandies.

CAN'T SKIRT THE ISSUE

Despite not being a landmark trend for the Spring 09 season, the presence of mens' skirts on the runways left quite an impression. Designers from Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garcons [top left] to Etro [bottom left] and John Galliano [bottom right] all offered their take on the trend. Each designer added skirts to their collections in a way that only seemed to underscore the masculinity and aggression of the collections rather than lending a feminine sensibility. Marc Jacobs was quick to adopt the trend a couple of months ago, sporting a Comme des Garcons skirt while strolling with his beau. While the trend probably won't find very sturdy legs within the American market, it's a testament to the freedom and imagination designers are exercising in light of the present fincial crisis. It's also a topical way to bid adieu to St. Patrick's Day.

FIENDTUESDAY: Menswear

Designers of menswear for Spring 2009 are taking a wide leap into womenswear. Feminine signatures are now the new vogue for men. One of these trends is the belted waist. The belted waist is everywhere this Fall in womenswear, mostly notably at Diane Von Fursetenberg, who sent out several looks with belted blazers over dresses. Spring 2009 shows men carrying on this trend in looks that are reminiscent of tuxedo dressing but are used for both day and evening looks. Philip Lim [bottom left], Hermes [center], and Etro [bottom right] are all pioneering the trend.
