FIENDFRIDAY: TREND WATCH

STRIPES AND...STRIPES

A casual look at the people on the sidewalk will show you a lot of sour, depressed, and paranoid faces due to the current financial and swine crises that have been let loose on society. But a second look will probably blind you with stripes. A spring staple, they're all over the place this season from Michael Kors [bottom center], to Limi Feu [top left], to Narcisco Rodriguez [top right].

FIENDTHURSDAY: LE SMOKING 09 EDITION

STILL SMOKING

For Fall 2009 the spirit of the beloved YSL is heavy, and more potent from last season, perhaps in reaction to his death last year. The industry has had time to digest his passing, and as a result, his influence is wide.

The Fall 2009 season sees this classic reinvented in updated suits and in dresses and blouses with tuxedo detailing. Dolce and Gabanna take the slim, sleek silhouette and cigarette pants and give the look bouyant shoulders. Albino uses the tuxedo detailing in collars on blouses, sack dresses, and blouse/skirt looks, while Antonio Berardi stays close to his inspiration.

FIENDWEDNESDAY: ACCESSORIES

LIKE SOME GIRLS

A peculiar, though perhaps not completely unexpected item appeared on the Fall 2009 mens runways for Comme des Garcons: the man flat. Considering the blurring of the gender lines and the adopting of androgynous styles in the last few seasons, it seems like a natural progression for the trend to drift to the feet.

Rei Kawakubo sent out a collection in a subtle color palette with a distinct eccentricity she's become known for. Dress suits were accented with sweater vests in solids and an assortment of patterns and man skirts were offered again this season, this time in more variations. Looks like Comme des Garcons, which translates to, like some boys, is evolving to look like some girls.
